EN FUEGO HOOPS
LNBP 'Hot' Game of the Week
Mayas at Santos Reales
When:
Saturday 10/20
EFH PICK: Mayas by 4
Look
for EFH to pick up our fourth win of this season after the
Mayas
escape with a win when they visit San Luis this weekend.
This
is the Mayas first big test since they've run off four in a row in the
last two weeks. They're arguably playing some of the best basketball in
the league right now.
Daryl
Dorsey and Anthony Wilkens are two of the LNBP's most potent
scorers. Yusef Baker can also chip in to give the Mayas double digits.
Don't let the Mayas fool you at 6-5, they are streaking, hungry and
seem to be doing everything right on both sides of the ball.
Santos
is second overall in the league with a 10-2 record and number two in
the league in total points allowed. The Mayas will have their work cut
out for them on the road, but we like what 'Lil Majic' and
company have done so far this year. We said it here: Mayas win by 4.

HERE COMES SANTOS
FRIDAY OCT 19- MEXICO
CITY, MX
Coach
Frola has Santos well positioned to make a run at an LNBP title. You
heard it here first! Yeah, we like Santos to win it all! Go to
'Caliente' and make
your bet...Santos in six! Antoine Zachary was 'www.enfuegohoops.com' for Santos lighting up the Bucaneros for 46 in a 94-77 trouncing of the discombobulated Bucaneros. The Bucaneros got 18 from newcomer Naikea
Miller.
A 97-88 win over the Halcones of Cordoba has the Algodoneros
tied for fifth over all in the LNBP and within striking distance of
Halcones of Xalapa. Speaking of Xalapa, the first place team overall
and still undefeated Halcones put a hurtin' on the Venados
(Correcaminos of Matamoros), 113-86 to remain the leagues only
unbeatean squad.
The
expansion Dorados of Chihuahua beat up on the visting Angeles of Puebla
last night 93-77, picking up there eighth win in the process. Burried
53-32 at halftime Puebla simply could not recover. The Dorados
responded to a brief Angeles run in the fourth and maintained a safe
distance to secure the victory. Keenan Jourdan led all Dorado scorers
with 25, followed by his teammates Detrick White and Rafael Cruz who
poured in 20 and 15 respectively. Jair Peralta tallied a game high 27
and Jason Wilson dumped in 14 for Puebla.
One
of the hottest teams in the LNBP in recent weeks, the Mayas of Merida,
was cooled off last night as the Correcaminos of Victoria outlasted the
offensive onslaught of 'Lil Majic' Dorsey, Anthony Wilkens and Yusef
Baker, who combined for 72 points, to win at home 84-83. Robert Hornsby
led Victoria with 20.
After
a crushing loss to the Dorados last week, the Lobos Grises got back on
track with a 91-72 pasting of a strong Tecos squad. Playing at home,
the Lobos welcomed back Ron Selleaze, who finished with 20, and never
relinquished the lead from the tip. Noe Alonzo led all scorers with 24.
Wesley Fluellen notched 17 in the loss for the Tecos.
The
Soles returned to their winning ways after cruising to a 93-83 win over
the visiting Lechugueros. Tough defense in the second half was key
though the Sole offense was clicking led by Dejuan Wheat's 26 points, 5
threes, and Greg Lewis' 23. Enrique Zuniga and Harold Arceneaux paced
the Lechugueros combining for 51 points.
Leroy
Hickerson led the Galgos to their fourth victory in a row after a 74-67
win over the slumping Panteras. Tijuana will host the Lechugueros next
Saturday when they hope to improve to .500 at 7-7. Zacatecas took care
of business against the Caballeros, thanks in large part to the overall
play and long distance shooting from Kenya Capers, winning at home
82-74.
EFH STAFF-MEXICO
ROAD TO LNBP CHAMPIONSHIP GOES THROUGH VERACRUZ
THURSDAY OCT 18
MEXICO
CITY, MX
The
Halcones
Rojos sit at 8-4, tied for fourth place overall so far this season in
the LNBP. They are one of the leagues strongest teams thanks in large
part to a trio of LNBP veterans, Reggie Jordan, Oscar Castellanos and
Charles Byrd. The latter, Byrd, contends that he and the Halcones Rojos
are prepared to be LNBP champions.
To
get there, however, Byrd and the Halcones Rojos will likely have to get
past the Halcones of Xalapa, who are undefeated so far this year, and
the Halcones of Cordoba. Having some of the toughest teams in the LNBP
playing in the same conferences as the 'Red Birds' is going make for a
bottle neck on the way to capturing what would be their first LNBP
title. Byrd, a self proclaimed shooting guard but can play a solid
point, feels the LNBP has evolved in the last four years and relishes
playing against some of the LNBP's top talent like 'Lil Majic' Dorsey,
Larry Taylor and Kenya Capers.
While
Byrd won't guarantee a championship, he believes that the Halcones have
'the team to do it.' The road to the LNBP crown goes through the state
of Veracruz, hopefully, for Byrd's sake and that of his teammates, the
Halcones Rojos can succeed in their mission to be the last team
standing this year in the LNBP.
EN FUEGO HOOPS RUNS DOWN THE LNBP
MONDAY OCT 15
MEXICO
CITY, MX
It's
probably nearing payday for LNBP players, the 'quincena' its called, in
case anybody decides to pay us a visit here at enfuegohoops.com, you'll
learn a little bit. Yes, that is how we 'rollar.'
So,
we wonder about the state of the LNBP, like we wonder about the state
of Mexico. 'How's it all going?' Since September 6th, the opening of
the LNBP season, La Ola Roja, an LNBP mainstay for 6 years announces
that they will not participate in league play, their replacement team,
the Guerreros of Morelia, stopped paying players, stopped playing games
and stopped talking to the press last week. Two more LNBP teams moved
cites in in that same week and we question the commitment of the LNBP
refs to keeping it clean. Are players really getting hurt?
On
the other hand, the LNBP is Latin America's and Mexico's top
professional league, with excellent homegrown talent, check native
Anthony Pedroza playing with the Spurs and top notch foreign talent,
like LNBP mainstays Sam Bowie and Boubacar Aw or recent LNBP arrival
Darryl 'Hurricane' Dorsey. The LNBP, like Mexico is a paradox.
Extravagant
wealth pushed up against destitute poverty, eyes afixed on
a technologically endowed future while many major accounting tasks are
completed with a no. 2 pencil and a notebook. It's hurry up and wait,
'ahorita, amigo...' Sometimes, you find yourself shaking your head in
disbelief. The state of the LNBP, like the state of Mexico, is not
really known. It might look good from the outside but when you get up
close to and smell it first hand, it could make your stomach
turn.. Or, maybe we're wrong. Maybe it's the other way around. Once you
let your guard down a bit and understand that 'asi es' in Mexico is all
you need to know, then, in those terms, the LNBP and Mexico is all
good. Both keep moving forward, mostly. Just don't ask 'why?' because
the answer may be hard to come by if you ever get to it all. 'Asi
es...'
So,
after our little rant, we hope everyone gets paid on time and shares
their basketball experience in Mexico with us and anyone else they
might find because surely it is and will be one of a kind. Last night
in the LNBP, we cared mostly about one game.
The
'En Fuego Hoops Hot Game of the Week.' We're working on shortening the
name, any suggestions? Our unbeaten streak came to and end last night
as our prediction that the Algodoneros would strike down Zacatecas with
'great furious anger' by at least 13 points was not even in the realm
of comprehensible as Zacatecas beat the Algodoneros 100-94. Kenya
Capers, who is near the top of our list for LNBP Newcomer of the Year,
torched the Algodoneros with 33. Josh Cooperwood dropped 9 dimes to
help Zacatecas improve to 6-6. En Fuego Hoops drops to 3-1-1 this year
for it's 'HGOTW' predictions.
Still
not much noise under the boards from the world's tallest man, Sun Ming.
Despite his absence from the box score, his team, Fuerza Regia downed
the Soles 108-102 thanks to a monster game from Fred Hooks who had 29
and 14. Hooks was one of 3 Fuerza players with 20 or more points. Greg
Lewis had a double-double for the Soles with 31 and 13.
Thanks
to the 1-2 punch of Leroy Hickerson and Anthony Farmer, who
combined for 58 points, the Galgos inched closer to .500 after
their 108-101 victory over the Lobos UAC. The expansion
Dorados
improved to 7-5 and third in the LNBP's Northern Divsion as they snuck
out of Durango with a 78-71 victory over a strong Lobos squad. Coach
Frola has Santos playing 'enfuegohoops.com' after a convincing 94-80
win over the Correcaminos of Victoria. Santos is hunting down Xalapa
for the top spot overall in the LNBP as San Luis currently sits at
10-2.
The
Bravos (formely known as the Correcaminos of Reynosa, we think) downed
the Venados (formerly known as the Correcaminos of Matamoros, we think)
90-82 in a battle for LNBP border team supremacy. Both teams are LNBP
cellar dwellars. The Lechugueros beat up on the Pioneros 106-74. Harold
Arceneaux led the way for the Lechugueros with 23. We posit
that
the Guerreros of Morelia are back in action but maybe it's better they
step back out of the action after getting pasted by the Panteras
103-70. The Tecos improved to 8-4 at the expense of the
Angleles,
winning 80-70
After
a 101-92 win over the Caballeros, Cordoba stayed tied for the third
best spot overall in the league at 9-3. Darryl 'Hurricane' Dorsey was
nice with 28 in they Mayas 79-66 triumph over the Bucaneros. Dorsey's
teammates Yusef Baker and Anthony Wilkens combined for 39
points.
With the win the Mayas are playing above .500 and are within
striking distance of some of the LNBP's top teams. One of
them,
the Halcones of Xalapa, remained unbeaten after a 92-73 victory over
cross state rival Halcones of Veracruz. Xalapa is the LNBP's only
undefeated team at 12-0.
Devons
Ford's 32 paced the Panteras past the Pioneros 92-75 who seem to be
struggling as of late. Josh Reisman, chipped in with 7 points.
The Halcones of Cordoba outlasted the Tecos 80-76 to improve
to
third best in the league at 9-3.
MORE LNBP CHANGES, WHO CAN KEEP UP?
THURSDAY OCT 11 REYNOSA, MX
After
the Guerreros of Morelia have mysteriously dropped from LNBP league
play, the LNBP announced today that two more teams will be changing
names and locations.
The
Correcaminos of Matamoros will relocate to Nuevo Laredo and play in
this border cities first class facilities at the Unidad Deportive in
Nuevo Laredo. The Correcaminos of Reynosa will move to
Piedras
Negras and play under the name of the 'Bravos.' They will play
Nuevo Laredo (Old Matamoros) this Saturday, the
13th.
Not
too many detials from the league, well none really,
surrounding
the changes, how they came to be or what effect they may have on
plyaers or fans. Only that they want to give the teams in the
league the best opportunity to flourish. I suppose the Guerreros of
Morelia were overlooked in that respect. If there are any players who
were with Morelia, please let us know what's up, drop us an email with
the dirt.
In other
LNBP news, George Torres, head coach of Fuerza Regia announced
yesterday that he is stepping down for 'personal reasons.' Torres
advised team president, Serigo Ganem that he must return to his native
Puerto Rico for an indefinite amount of time. It might be a blessing in
disguise for Fuerza who have underachieved this season so far and sit
at 5-5.
Check
out tonights 'Classic' matchup between the undefeated and league
leading Halcones of Xalapa as they face off against a strong Halcones
Rojos squad in Xalapa. Xalapa's high powered offense will be with out
Greg Plummer, who is out 6-8 weeks after suffering a leg injury in
Puebla last weekend, will run up against one of the LNBP's best
defenses.
Veracruz
may be without Reggie Jordan, who his key to the Halcones Rojos
offense. Xalapa owns Veracruz in the regular season series with a 6-2
advantage. Full update and analyis can be found here at
www.enfueoghoops.com, that is if the 4 people who read this decide to
come back to us tomorrow!
DARMETRIUS KILGORE SIGNS WITH ALBANY IN CBA
TUESDAY OCTOBER 9
Albany,
NY
Darmetrius Kilgore who had a
solid camp but
was overlooked at the En Fuego/LNBP Player showcase in San Diego this
past August recently signed with the CBA's Albany Patroons. EFH hopes
Kilgore finds it comfortable in Albany this season. Our only
advice; stay away from the Purple Pub or the Partiidge Pub or any pubs
for that matter. Read on for the original press release from the Albany
Patroons website.
"The
Albany Patroons are excited to announce the signing of their first
player for the 2007-2008 season. Darmetries Kilgore, a 6'5 Guard and
graduate of Purdue University, brings a strong list of credentials to
the Patroons roster. Kilgore's awards list begins as a high school
McDonald's All-American candidate ('99), a Junior College All-Regional
Team ('00) and a Junior College All-American ('01).
After
attending Tyler (Texas) Junior College, he transferred to Purdue where
he completed his college career. As a Junior, he saw action in every
game, scored in double figures in 18 of 31 games, hit at least one
three-point field goal in 24 games, captured at least four rebounds in
11 games, scored double figures in nine consecutive games, led team in
scoring in two games, and was Purdue's No. 2 scorer, averaging 9.9
points and 2.5 rebounds.
Kilgore
went on to play in the IBL with the 2005 Grand Rapids Flight, where he
was the top scorer with an average of 18.4 points per game and was
named to the 2005 IBL All-Star Team. His last stop before signing with
the Patroons was a two year stint with the Elkhart Express of the IBL,
helping the Express win the title game two years in a row. "
MORELIA LEAVING LNBP?
MONDAY OCTOBER 8
Morelia,
MX
Rumors abound that the expansion Guerreros of
Morelia no longer have an LNBP team. An announcement on the LNBP's
website said the Guerreros would cancel last Thursday's matchup against
the Mayas, which they did, due to problems with their
gymnasium.
Then,
curiously enough, no results came in for the Guerreros game this past
Saturday in which they were supposed to match up against the Bucaneros
of Campeche. That game was featured here as our 'En Fuego Hot Game of
the Week,' but to our dismay, this battle of the cellar dwellars never
came to be.
Rumors
of a possible departure from the leauge only 10 games into the season
coninue unabated as there has been no correspondence from team
officials, coaches or players to deny that the team is packing it in.
In fact, word on the calle is that players have left the city.
So,
after some deliberation among the EFH staff, we've decided that our EN
FUEGO HOOPS HOT GAME OF THE WEEK between the Guerreros, who are no
longer, and the Bucaneros is a 'push.' Of course, we're not going to
give ourselves the loss and we agree, there is no way we can get the
win. The undefeated streak continues....
EFH STAFF-MEXICO
HALCONES STAY UNBEATEN AT 10-0
SUNDAY OCTOBER 7
Halcones
Xal. 104-Angeles 95
League
leading Halcones of Xalapa outlasted a
pesky
Angeles of Puebla team 104-95 to stay undefeated at 10-0. After a brief
run following the departure of Halcone Gregory Plummer, who left the
game due to a leg injury in the second quarter, the Angeles faced a
52-46 halftime deficit.
Puebla
would get as close as three points, 88-85 with four minutes
remaining in the third but mishaps with the ball and poor shooting from
the charity stripe sealed the Angeles fate. Puebla fell to 3-7 and
prepare for a four game road trip during which they will face the
LNBP's Northern Division teams. Hernan Salcedo dropped a game high 28
for Puebla in the loss. Victor Mariscal and Sam Bowie chipped in for 20
apiece for the first place Halcones.
Mayas 96-Pioneros 84
Watch
out now! Yes, the Mayas are coming. Be
afraid,
be very afraid. After outlasting the Pioneros in Cancun 96-84, the
Mayas have notched their 4th win in a row and 6th overall. Anthony
Wilkens and and Edwin Sanchez combined for 49 to lead the Mayas and the
absence of Daryl Dorsey's name from the box score is curious; while it
is a positive that the Mayas can win without his offensive production,
it's something the team can likely go without for an extended period of
time. Galen Robinson is a baller, he had 22. Do you miss Reynosa Galen?
Sherrell Ford, is an LNBP newcomer, he did work with 21.
Soles 75-Galgos 77
A
painful loss indeed for the Soles as they
fell at
home to division rival Tijuana 77-75 last night. Horacio Llamas
returned to the Sole line up and led the defending LNBP champions with
15 points. Llamas didn't get much help as Mexicali fell to 4-6 and
continue to search for answers that will get them back on the winning
track. Tijuana's Leroy Hickerson was solid with 23 for the Tijuanenses
who own bragging rights for now for LNBP supremacy in Baja California
Norte.
Algodoneros 103-Correcaminos Reynosa 102
Despite
a 30 point second quarter from
Reynosa, the
Algodoneros could not be denied their seventh victory in a row at home
as they downed the Correcaminos 103-102. Lee Cook had his best game yet
for the Algodoneros tallying 34 in the win. Teammates Blake Walker and
Noha Brown combined for 45.
Lobos UAD
99-Zacatecas 92
It
took an extra fram for the visiting Lobos
UAD to
put Zacatecas to bed, 99-92. A six point fun to open the overtime
period was the proverbial nail in the coffin for Zacatecas. Kenya
Capers dialed long distance with two three's in the closing minutes to
bring Zacatecas within three points with 20 seconds to play but the
Lobos slammed the door with smothering defense to hold Zacatecas off
and secure the win. Marcos Dorado put up 25 in the loss while Myron
Allen had 23 for the Lobos. Fuerza 88-Correcaminos Victoria 73
Fuerza
picked up their fifth victory last
night
after beating the Correcaminos at home 88-73. Not much word out of
Monterrey regarding Sun Ming's contribution in the win. Nor is their
any information about Omar Quintero's role in Fuerza's victory. Gerrald
Williams poured in 23 for Fuerza in the upset win. Fuerza entertains
Santos tomorrow night in Monterrey.
Tecos 86-Caballeros 86
The
expansion Caballeros fell for the second
time to
the visiting Tecos 86-81 and now stand out 4-5 overall. Casey Cook led
the Caballeros with 28 and Wesley Fluellen was 'en fuego' with 37.
Caballeros will host the struggling Angeles of Puebla and the Halcones
of Cordoba this week.
Dorados
94-Correcaminos Matamoros
73
Panteras 87-Lechugueros 75
Halcones Cor 113-Halcones Ver 96
Lobos UAC 91-Santos 87

UAD 96-Zacatecas 94
LOBOS GRISES, SOLES WIN
FRIDAY OCTOBER 5
Lobos
UAD 96-Zacatecas 94
Hot shooting from the tip gave Zacatecas a
little
cushion from the start but the Lobos would battle back in the first
period and hold off a pesky Zacatecas side to finish with a 96-94
victory. Zacatecas awoke in the fourth with a barrage of threes,
threatening to take over the lead and with four seconds remaining had
an opportunity to tie or win but a driving Olivia do Nascimento
was allowed only a prayer, which fell short, by the stingy Lobo
defense. Larry Taylor
was the high man for the Lobos Grises with 26. Kenya Capers
continued his steady offensive production droppiing 24 in the loss. His
teammate, Justin Griffin
poured in 22.
Tecos
84-Caballeros 79
The win was theirs for the taking but the Caballeros of Sinaloa could
not finish eventually losing to the Tecos 84-79. The Caballeros had an
offensive meltdown in the fourth quarter and the Tecos were able to get
to the rim in the final five minutes taking a 71-70 lead which the
Tecos would never relinquish. Cedric
Patton led all scorers in the loss with 32 for the
Caballeros. Both teams match up again this Saturday in Sinaloa. Pioneros 78-Bucaneros 69
Yahir
Malpica, Eric Carr and Robby
Collum
scored in double figs to help the Pioneros of Cancun to their third win
in a row as they downed the visiting Bucaneros of Campeche
78-69.
Coach Fox and company will have their hands full as they entertain the
Mayas of Merida in the "Classico Sureno" this Saturday. The Mayas will
come in as one of the hottest teams in the LNBP largely as a result of
the young guns, Daryl
Dorsey and Anthony
Wilkens, two of the top scorers in the league. Halcones Rojos 93-Angeles 86
Puebla fell to 3-6 yesterday after losing to the visiting Halcones
Rojos yesterday 93-86. Poor shooting from the line and the field
plagued the Angels all game long, leaving the door wide open for the
Halcones win. Panamanian Jair
Peralta led all scorers for the Angels with 26 followed by
Jason "LNBP
Newcomer of the year so far" Wilson's 20. Alonso Izaguirre and
Reggie Jordan
combined for 47 for the Halcones. Puebla entertains the LNBP's top
team, the Halcones of Xalapa, this Saturday October 6th at
7:30pm.
Soles
76-Galgos 71
In the 'Classico del Norte' the Soles of
Mexicali
got back on the winning track after defeating the Tijuana Galgos 76-71
in Tijuana. The Galgos had a win wrapped up but mental lapses in the
fourth quarter, 7 missed free throws in the final minutes, allowed the
Soles to steal a win. James
Penny and DeJuan
Wheat combined for 33 points for the Soles. Leroy Hickerson
tallied 30 in the loss for the Galgos.
Algodoneros
113-Corr. Matamoros 89
The Algodoneros preserved their undefeated home record last night after
rolling over the visiting Correcaminos of Matamoros 113-89. Blake Walker and Noha Brown, in his
debut, paced the Algodoneros with 30 apiece. Aaron Lynch poured
in 28 for Matamoros. The win marks the Algodoneros sixth in a row at
home.
Lechugueros
77-Panteras 61
Playing at home against the Panteras, the Lechugueros outlasted the
struggling felines and secured an important win 77-61. Despite a
miserable second quarter during which the Lechugueros shot 27% from the
field, the play of Harold
Arceneaux, 22 points, and Enrique Zuniga, 19
points, the Lechugueros we able to hold off a hungry Pantera side who
fell to 1-8 while the Lechugueros improved to 5-4. LATE GAME: Dorados
94-Correcaminos Reynosa 74
DORSEY & WILKENS LEAD LNBP,
MAYAS
TUESDAY OCTOBER 2
(photos credit www.lnbp.com.mx)
The Mayas
are a dangerous team right now in the LNBP. Winning their
last four contests in a row, the Mayas now find themselves at
4-4
and poised to break out of the middle of the LNBP pack. The Mayas have
a team of role players that fit nicely with two of the LNBP's most
productive offensive players.
Darryl 'Hurricane' Dorsey and Anthony 'Still
searching for a good LNBP
nickname' Wilkens, who this week were recognized as the 'Best in the
LNBP' this week are an offensive force to be reckoned with. Wilkens led
all scorers in the league this past week dropping 65 in two wins for
the Mayas. Dorsey, averaged 30 in the same two game and was the fourth
leading scoring overall in the league this week. The Mayas
face
the struggling Guerreros this Thursday and then the Pioneros of Cancun
in the 'Clasico Sureno' on Saturday.

EFH HOT GAME: LOBOS UAC COME OUT ON TOP
TUESDAY OCTOBER 2
Lobos 95-Fuerza Regia 84 (photo credit www.lnbp.com.mx)

Well, the
Lobos didn't win both games in the series but the were triumphant in
game two which EFH picked as the 'Hot Game of the Week.' That makes us
3-0 and yeah, we'll go on ringing our own bell 'cause that's what you
do when you're undefeated.
Last night
in game two of the 'Clasico del Norte' Fuerza Regia lost at home to the
visting Lobos UAC 95-84. Fuerza's most recent pick up, Mexican National
Team member, Omar
Quintero, lamented that Fuerza 'let down on defense' and
gave the Lobos 'too much freedom to shoot threes, and that killed us.
They were hungrier today.' Quintero was the high man for Fuerza with
26, his teammate Gerrick
Rivera had 22.
The Lobos
offensive prowess was demonstrated with 3 players over twenty points
led by Sergio Sanchez'
30. Hector Hernandez
and Tim Parham combined
for 49. No word from Monterrey regarding the performance of the worlds
tallest man, Sun Ming.
Fuerza drops to 4-4 while the Lobos pick up a game and stand at 3-5.
Fuerza awaits the Correcaminos of Victoria this Sunday, October
7.
EFH STAFF-MEXICO CITY
MAYAS SURGING, MEXICALI STRUGGLING
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 30
Mayas 109 - Panteras 97
There will never be another 'Jordan and
Pippen.' I
think Daryl Dorsey and Anthony Wilkens would aggree but the Mayas
definitely have a 1-2 combo to be reckoned with in Dorsey and Wilkens.
In their third game together, Dorsey and Wilkens have led the Mayas to
their third win in a row and are arguabley the hottest team in the LNBP
in the last week. The 'two headed' monster that is Dorsey and Wilkens
combined for 61 points as the Mayas struck down the Panteras 109-97.
Devon Ford was an absolute nightmare for the Maya defense as he torched
Merida for an LNBP season high of 49. Unfortunately it went in vain for
the struggling Panteras. Guard Josh Riesman, who was an All Star at the
LNBP/En Fuego Hoops Showcase in San Diego, put up some nice numbers
with 16 for the Panteras. Josh, how about a heads up? Let En Fuego know
'what is what' in the land of 'hot water.'
Santos 91 - Soles 71
Time is running out for the Soles before we start thinking they just
aren't very good this year. We're almost there but we'll give it
another week or so. Sure it's early but they have played terribly as
defending LNBP champs so far this year. The Soles lost their fifth game
last night falling at the hands of the Santos, 91-71. Ok,
maybe
we're being a bit too harsh. For the second game in a row, captain
Horacio Llamas didn't play and James Penny left the game in the first
quarter due to an injury to his right hand. Greg Lewis picked up
another double double for the Soles with 19 and 11, he was the only
sunshine in an otherwise very overcast offensive night for the
Soles.
Corre Vic 76 - Galgos 74
Stephen Sorian dropped 21 to lead the
Correcaminos
of Victoria past the Galgos of Tijuana last night 76-74. Despite 26
from the Galgos' Leroy Hickerson, Tijuana came up short on the road
falling to 2-6 overall while the Correcaminos sit in second place in
the LNBP's Northern Division at 6-2.
Corre Rey 91 - Lobos Grises 110
Mugage Thomas, Myron Allen and Larry Taylor
combined
for 66 points to pace the Lobos Grises past the Correcaminos of Reynosa
110-91. Gabriel Freeman put up 22 and Luke Bookout notched 21 in the
loss for Reynosa.
Bucaneros 66 - Lechugueros 72
Chalk another loss up for the Bucaneros as
they fell
at home to the Lechugueros 66-72. Harold Arceneaux Led a trio of
Lechugueros in double figs with 19. Javier Gonzalez had 21 and Antoine
Hyman put up 12 in the loss for the Bucaneros.
Angeles 84 - Halcones Cor. 97
Andre Laws was feeling it in Puebla Saturday
night
finishing with 26. His teammate, Dallas Logan put up 25 but in the end
it was't enough for the Halcones of Cordoba who dropped to 5-2 after
losing in on the road 97-84 to a surging Puebla squad. Hernan Salcedo
had a team high 18 for Puebla.
Halcones Xal. 94 - Caballeros 76
Victor Mariscal had 24 to lead the Halcones to
their
eighth win in a row, solidifying their position as the team to beat in
the LNBP. Xalapa remains as the lone undefeated team after disposing of
the visiting Caballeros last night 94-76. Cedric Patton tallied 23 in
the loss for the Caballeros.

SOLES LOSE AGAIN
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 28
Correcaminos Vic. 75-Soles 73
Chalk
another loss up for the defending LNBP Champion Mexicali Soles. For the
first time in franchise history, Mexicali fell 73-75 on the road to the
Correcaminos of Victoria.
Hugo Carillo, 14
points and 7 boards, and Greg
'Double-Double' Lewis,
21 and 16, held the paint down for the Soles but it ultmately was not
enough. Defensively, Mexicali, stood firm but questionable
ball
handling, which led to a 'monton' of turnovers cost them a win.
Halcones
Xalapa 96-Tecos 80
Xalapa rolled to it's seventh win in a row last night battering the
'Owls' of Guadalajara
96-80. The Halcones have been untouchable early this season and sit
alone atop the overall LNBP standings as the only undefeated team
remaining in the league. Victor
Mariscal dropped a game high 27 for the Halcones while
Wesley Fluellen poured in 21 in the loss for the Tecos.
Algodoneros
101-Dorados 79
After 2 road losses, the Algodoneros bounced back at home last night
against the Dorados, winning easily 101-79. Blake Walker and Karim Malpica led
the Algodoneros with 28 and 22 respectively. For the Dorados, Keenan Jourdan, Rafael
Cruz and Detrick White combined
for 68 in a losing effort .
Zacatecas
110-Reynosa 92
Zacatecas picked up its third win after
rolling over Reynosa 110-92 on the road. Alexandre Nascimiento and
Kenya Capers continue
to light up all LNBP defenses torching Reynosa for 31 apiece.
Bucaneros
84-Panteras 57
A recent coaching change and the addtion of some help in the post, the
Bucaneros finally picked up their first LNBP win. Unfortunately, it
came at the expense of the Panteras who seemingly couldn't hit the
ocean if they fell out of a boat. The Bucaneros showed no mercy upon
the hapless Panteras winning 84-57. Antoine
Hyman,
was cramin' it on everyone's head. At least, that's what our sources in
Campeche say. He was an 2007 ABA Champion with the Vermont Frost Heave,
we like the ABA and the Frost Heaves, so by default we like Antoine.
Yes, we wish we had a box score for you too. Somebody call
the
LNBP for a box score, please!
Mayas
94-Lechugueros 89
It was the usual suspects again for the Mayas, Darryl Dorsey and Anthony Wilkens
paced the Mayas to their third win after downing the Lechugueros 94-89.
Dorsey finished with 32 and Wilkens with 34 for the Mayas who all of a
sudden appeared on the LNBP southern division radar.
More to come on Dorsey's return,
the Soles losing streak and Thursday night's results from the LNBP.
WILLIE DUNN IS HEADING TO NORWAY
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 27
The Kristiansand Pirates of Norway's BNLO league
contracted the services of forward Willie Dunn last week. Dunn, who
averaged 14 points and 6 boards at the LNBP/En Fuego Hoops Player
Showcase this past August in San Diego, was curiously overlooked by
LNBP teams despite his All Star status at the Showcase. Check EFH for
updates on Dunn's progress in Norway. Below is the original release
from the Georgia
Southern's Men's basketball website.
"Former
Georgia Southern men's basketball player
Will Dunn has signed a professional contract with the Kristiansand
Pirates of the BNLO League in Norway.
Dunn, who received his degree in May, averaged 5.3 points and 4.2
rebounds in his two seasons in Statesboro. In 2005-06, he shot a
team-high 57.7 percent from the floor and was sixth on the team in
scoring at 6.4 ppg.
His 4.8
rebounds per contest were second-best on
the squad.
Prior to his arrival at Georgia Southern, Dunn attended Compton
Community College where he led the Tartars to a 17-8 record in 2003-04
and the California state championship.
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Dunn was an All-Los Angeles Times
selection after scoring 16.1 ppg as a senior at Fremont High School.
The Pirates finished eighth in the BNLO League last season."
REYNOSA COMES OUT ON TOP
Fuerza Regia 91-Correcaminos Reynosa 105
Better late than never. On Monday night the Correcaminos of Reynosa
took it out on Fuerza Regia in their 'house' winning easily
105-91.
A
trio of 'Roadrunners' led by Quentin Gonzalez, followed by Kevin Luke
and Gabriel Freeman combined for 76 of Reynosa's 105 points. Fuerza
opened the fourth quarter down 20 eventually cutting the lead down to 7
but the Correcamino defense would allow Fuerza no closer. Omar
Quintero, who had 6 turnovers in his first game with Fuerza, was
nowhere to be found in his second game with the team. Likewise, Sun
Ming, Fuerza's big (literally) pick up this off season was also quiee
agains the correcaminos. Fred Hooks was the high man for Fuerza who
dropped to .500 at 3-3. Fuerza faces the the Lobos UAC twice this
coming weekend, check the EFH GOTW for more on next Monday's showdown
between these two teams.

QUINTERO HELPS FUERZA TO WIN, IS THE 'MAJIC' BACK
IN MERIDA?
LNBP
RESULTS FROM SUNDAY 9/23
Fuerza Regia 82-Correcaminos Matamoros 72
Can we get a witness? Could it really be? Is the 'Majic' back in
Merida playing with the Mayas? We don't know for sure so we're going to
hold off.
Let's
get to last night's LNBP games. In an interesting twist and without
much notice from anyone since his snubbing of the Pantera two
weeks ago, point guard Omar
Quintero, helped lead Fuerza Regia to an 82-72 victory
over the visiting Correcaminos of Matamoros.
Scandal
erupted two weeks ago when Quintero, who verbally agreed to sign with
the Panteras, changed his mind and instead was going to sing with
Cordoba. As of yesterday, EFH
learned that Quintero is now with Fuerza. Yes,
there are more questions than answers. Sun Ming had what
might be his first breakout game notching 13 points while Quintero
added 16. For the Correcaminos, Aaron
Lynch's 29 went in vain. No word yet out of Monterrey how
familia Ganem got their paws on Quintero.
Correcaminos Reynosa 90-Lobos UAC
79 Reynosa
was more focused from the tip, dominating the Lobos UAC at home and
eventually winning 90-79. Adept shooting from 'threelandia,' Reynosa
finished with 11 in total, allowed them room to breath. Unforced errors
on the part of the Lobos enabled Reynosa to hold the lead and improve
to 2-3 while the struggling Lobitos fell to 2-4. Gerardo Rios and his
band of 3 pointers led Reynosa with 20 while Dwight Brewington
tallied 24 in the loss for Saltillo.

RESULTS FROM MONDAY 9/17
Algodoneros 99-Fuerza Regia 89
In the LNBP's only game last night, the Algodoneros dominated from the
tip, defending their 'casa' and winning 99-89 against visiting Fuerza
Regia. Blake Walker
put on a show in front of a packed shack tallying 29 points for the
Algodoneros. His teammate Lee
Cook pourded in 26. Despite stellar games from Fuerza's Gerald Williams and Fred Hooks,
31 and 28 respectively, the 'Regiamontanos' fell to 2-2. The
Algodoneros extended their win streak to 4 and remain as one of only 3
unbeaten LNBP teams so far this season.

GALGOS BOUNCE BACK, HALCONES HEAD TO INDEPENDENCE
CUP FINALS
LNBP
RESULTS FROM SUNDAY 9/16
Galgos 86-Correcaminos Reynosa 75
After a lackluster performance Saturday in which the Galgos let what
could have been their first win this season against Matamoros, they
bounced back Sunday night. Heading back to TJ from Matamoros the
Galgos, with a layover in Reynosa, won their first LNBP game
downing the Correcaminos of Reynosa 86-75. Leroy Hickerson again
led the Galgos scoring a game high 27. The Galgos face the visiting
Barreteros this Thursday at home.
Halcones
Rojos 92-Lechugueros 81 The
Halcones Rojos and Lechugueros faced off for the second time in as many
days to play for a ticket to the Independence Cup Final. The Halcones
avenged yesterday's loss winning at home 92-81 will represent the
LNBP's Southern Division in the Independence Cup Final against the
Lobos Grises UAD. The date for the Cup final has yet to be
determined. Reggie
Jordan was the high man for Veracruz dumping in
30 while Maurice
Riddick put up 24 in a losing effort for the
Lechugueros.
GALGOS, PANTERAS 'GRITANDO' FOR MERCY
LNBP
RESULTS FROM SATURDAY 9/15
Galgos 72-Correcaminos Matamoros
88
It was a festive night indeed for the Correcaminos of Matamoros as they
broke into the LNBP win column after handling the Galgos of Tijuana
88-72. It would make for a long trip home for Tijuana and put a damper
on any plans by the Galgos to enjoy the Mexican Independence
Day
celebrations, which were taking place in every corner of the Mexican
republic Saturday and early Sunday depending on how patriotic you
were. On the other hand, maybe Tijuana kicked
off
their Independence Day Celebrations early as the Correcaminos averaged
a 24
point lead for three quarters. Note to Galgos coaching staff, players
and coaches, lay off the tequila on game days. Eduardo Linan and Aaron Lynch dropped
25 and 24
respectively for Matamoros while Leroy
Hickerson was anything but
'borracho' with 28.
Halcones
Xalapa 120-Panteras 93
Maybe
the Panteras caught a ride with the Galgos and decided to kick of the
Independence Day festivities prematurely as well. Save for Devon Ford and his
24 points, the Panteras were 'gritando' for mercy as they were run over
on the road by the Halcones of Xalapa 120-93. The Halcone trio of Greg
Plummer, Sam
Bowie and Victor
Avila combined to score 67 of the
Halcone's 120 points.
Lechugueros
82-Halcones Rojos 79
Oscar
Castellanos had 24 as the Halcones lost their first LNBP
contest of the
young season 79-82 to the visiting Lechugueros. Both teams match up
again tonight at 7pm in the Independence Cup Finals.
Corrrecaminos
Victoria
75-Zacatecas 72
Zacatecas
fell to 1-3 last after losing to the the Correcaminos of Victoria
75-72. A flurry of offensive jabs put Zacatecas up 24-3 early but the
lead could not be held as the Correcaminos battled back thanks in large
part to the offensive efficiency of Auguste
Wilder who had a game high
24. Justin Griffin
poured in 21 for Zacatecas in the loss.
Puebla
88-Guerreros 70
Lobos UAD 95-San Luis 81
Caballeros 97-Mayas 89

GUERREROS DESPERATELY NEED HELP
MORELIA,
MX-SEPTEMBER 12
Tecos 96-Guerreros53
Nowhere
to go but up for the Guerreros of Morelia, Michoacan. It wasn't the
start that the Guerros were looking for and after their first LNBP game
at home this season, the Guerros will be returning to the proverbial
drawing board seeking answers.
The Tecos
UAG beat up on the Guerreros last night 96-53. The Guerreros,
who are holding a tryout this weekend, have yet to finalize a rotation
and are playing shorthanded. From the tip, the Tecos dominated and ran
away from the Guerros by halftime. Raimundo Castillo paced all scorers
dropping 24 for the Tecos. The Guerreros face the Angeles of Puebla at
home, who are also looking for their first win, this Saturday,
September 15th. The Tecos will entertain the Mayas at home this
Thursday, September 13th.
Still
no word from the LNBP, Panteras or the Halcones of Cordoba, regarding
the sticky contract negotiations of Omar Quintero. Yesterday, Quintero
announced he had signed with the Halcones after verbally agreeing with
the Panteras some weeks earlier. The Panteras ownership released a
vicious press anouncement, which was published on the LNBP website,
regarding Quintero's less than respectable change of heart. The
announcement has since been removed. Look for the Pantera-Halcone
Cordoba match up late season in January.
JUST BARELY FOR FUERZA, QUE PASA QUINTERO?
MONTERREY,
MX-SEPTEMBER 11
Fuerza Regia 86-Barreteros 84
It wasn't pretty but Fuerza Regia outlasted the visting Barreteros last
night 86-84 finally breaking i to the LNBP win column. With
both
teams playing in their second game in two nights, it would be Fuerza's
lethal combination of Gerald Williams, 30 points, and Fred Hooks, 20
who made the difference. Kenya Capers led all scores pouring in 35 for
the Barreteros. LNPB action picks up again this Thursday.
In
other LNBP news, the Panteras of Aguascalientes made some noise today
after Omar Quintero, the point guard for Mexico's NT, verbally agreed
to play for the Panteras and then subsequently changed his mind.
Quintero's change of heart has caused an uproar in Aguascalientes as he
decided instead to sign on with the Halcones of Cordoba. The Panteras,
in a scathing press release, demanded Quintero provide a
public
explanation, continuing that Quintero is a "hombre sin etica and
palabra." Is there any need for a translation? The feeling is
not
one of respect and certainly one of frustration on behalf of the
Panteras. No word yet from Quintero or the Halcones on the developing
situation. Hey, Panteras, who needs Quintero when you've got Devon Ford?

BARRETEROS SNEAK AWAY WITH WIN, SUN MING, WHERE
ARE YOU?
SALTILLO,
MX-SEPTEMBER 10
Barreteros 86-Lobos UAC 84
In
one of Sunday's two LNBP match ups, the Barreteros stole a victory from
the Lobos UAC 86-84 thanks to an Evan Guerra putback with just 2
seconds left in the game. Stingy defense was a key to victory for the
visiting Barreteros who stand undefeated after 1 game, the Lobos fell
to 1-1. Kenya Capers led all Barretero scorers with 28 while Dwight
Brawington, of the Lobos, paced all scorers with 30.
Lobos Grises
UAD 104-Fuerza Regia 92
It was a hyped game indeed. Two of the LNBP's top squads
battling
for preeminence early in the season. The Lobos Grises UAD got the best
of Fuerza Regia in Monterrey last night winning 104-92. It was Sun
Ming's, one of the tallest men in the world, first official and highly
anticipated contest for Fuerza Regia. However, Ming was a non factor,
as Fuerza put together an unproductive night offensively and
defensively overall. Gerald Williams and Gerrick Rivera combined for 61
points to lead Fuerza but it wassn't enough to offset the balanced
attack of the Lobos Grises who were led by Larry Taylor's 28 points.
Fuerza entertains the visiting Barreteros tonight at 8pm.
PIONEROS RAIN ON TECOS PARADE
QUINTANA
ROO,
MX-SEPTEMBER 9
Pioneros 83-Tecos 67
Last night in Cancun, the Pioneros spoiled the
Tecos return to the LNBP tuning up the 'Owls'
83-67. Mike Tabb led the Pionero attack with 15. Wesley Fluellem
dropped a game high 32 for the Tecolotes. The Pioneros are on the road
this week and will face the expansion Angeles of Puebla this Thursday.
Lechugueros
101-Puebla 88
The Lechugueros broke into the win column for the first time in this
young LNBP season with a 101-88 victory over the visiting Angeles of
Puebla. Lechuguero Maurice Reddick came out of the gates firing from
deep punishing Puebla with 18 points in the first 10 minutes of
contest. Puebla stayed close until the last quarter when they simply
had no answer for Riddick who finished with 42. Jason 'Are they treatin' you
right in Puebla' Wilson, who
is anchoring Puebla thus far in the front court, notched 17 for the
Angels. Keep playing hard Jason and stay dry. We here it's leaking it
down in Puebla today.
Halcones
Cordoba 95-Panteras 85
Make it two in a row for the Halcones of Cordoba after visiting the
Panteras yesterday in Aguascalientes and leaving with a 95-85 win.
Although the battle was even from the tip, the
Panteras could
not convert offensively when it counted, which proved to be the
difference in the game. The Halcones front court is arguably one of the
strongest in the LNBP with Andrew Laws, 23 points, Jorge Rochin, 22
points and Dallas Logan, 21 points, and posed fits for the
Pantera
defense. Devon Ford did most of the offensive damage for the Panteras
with 29. Algodoneros
102-Soles of Mexicali 92
It's probably too early to worry for Sole fans as they dropped their
second game in a row last night in Torreon falling 92-102 to the
Algodoneros. No one said it would be easy to repeat as an LNBP Champion
and it certainly is no given with a target on their back when playing
on the road. Andre Joseph put out the Sole fire out with 41 followed by
Blake Walker's 27. Greg Lewis and Dejuan Wheat combined for 48 for the
Soles who have nowhere to go but up.
Halcones
Rojos 77-Mayas 68
Daryl 'Hurricane' Dorsey blew through Merida
and the
rest of the LNBP last year for the Mayas torching opposing
defenses and leading the Mayas to their first post season appearance in
team history. However, that was last season and Dorsey, unfortunately
for the Mayas, was nowhere to be seen in last nights 68-77 loss to the
Halcones Rojos. Mike Dean, again led the Mayas with 26, while the
twosome of Oscar Castellanos and Larry Nelson combined for 43 for the
Halcones.

With three ticks left on the clock, Albert Burditt, on an assist from

The
bucket by Burditt gave the Lobos UAC their first win over Durango in

CITY-SEPTEMBER 7
Soles 76-Dorados 90
Last season they took the LNBP crown in only their second year of
existence. They defended their 'casa' with the longest unbeaten streak
in the league last year. However, last night for the Soles was less
than memorable as they were humbled on the road, 90-76 by the
expansion Dorados of Chihuahua. Defensive lapses and lackluster
shooting late allowed the Dorados to rain
on the Soles championship parade. Greg Lewis picked up where he left
off last year leading the Soles with 19 followded by Richard Lewis' 14.
Horacio Llamas, coming off a successful campaign with the NT in Las
Vegas dropped 13 and collected 6 boards. Rafael Cruz led all scorers
with 24 for the Dorados while his teamate Detrick White notched
15.

Puebla! Playing on the road in their first LNBP game, the Angeles of

consistent and deadly Devon Ford paced the Panteras with 24 followed by
Jesus Campos with 20. American Jason
Wilson,
Puebla's pick up at the En Fuego Hoops Player Showcase in San Diego,
dropped 11 for Puebla. Puebla may be lacking some firepower, which they
seemed to have a few weeks ago in guard Carlton Holmes.

CITY-AUGUST 13
Yeah
it's a little late, the LNBP Player Showcase finished last Thursday but
give us a break already, we've been through 5 different time zones, 2
countries, cancelled flights, rental cars and Amtrak and still haven't
found a few pieces of luggage yet, all since leaving San Diego 4 days
ago! So, bear with us as we breakdown some of the Showcase highlights
in the next few weeks.
It
seemed as quiet as his personality. But on the other hand, maybe
Richard Davis is accustomed to dropping 50 or more a game. He didn't
say much, I guess he let his game do all the talking. Davis pumped in
56 (13 three's) in the final game of the Showcase Thursday, a
performance that buttoned up his spot in the Showcase All Star
game where he finished with 7. Davis battled fatigue and finished camp
with a 19 point average over 5 games.
Where
are you now Richard and why didn't the LNBP pick you up? Or
did they?
By the way, any players who had interaction or negotiated with the
LNBP, please, for the love of all that's Holy, let us know what is
happening.

SHOWCASE
PLAYERS OFFERED CONTRACTS
SAN
DIEGO-AUGUST 11
And
just like that it's over! We hope that all the players in attendance at
the EnFuegoHoops Player Showcase made it home safely. After 5 games in
two days, we're positive everyone can take a day or two off to rest
their bodies.
The
breakdown: We know that at least 5 players were offered contracts to
play in Mexico, another 5 were offered a paid opportunity to
participate in team tryouts in Mexico and 10 players were asked
directly for their contact information by LNBP league president Modesto
Robledo. There are a handful of other players, some who were not
selected in the All Star game, who may also be contacted by teams in
the LNBP.
Remember,
all Showcase players will receive a game DVD AT NO CHARGE. (Please give
us at least a week on this before requesting a DVD) Also, Showcase
stats, video and photos will be available on line very soon, so check
back here frequently. Also, look for your profile builder here in the
very near future, your profile will be searchable to teams on line. If
you participated in the Showcase and did not email us a detailed player
profile, please do so immediately!
EnFuegoHoops
wants to extend a sincere thanks to all the players that made the
commitment to come to San Diego, we hope your Showcase experience was
positive. Please continue update us on yor basketball progress, we want
to know. Drop us a line at: feedback@enfuegohoops.

40 MINUTES
OF 'INFIERNO,' TEAM MEXICO WINS 4TH IN A ROW
CHIHUAHUA-JUNE 25

Team Mexico
eventually squeaked by the Phoenix Stars last night, 94-92,
to notch their fourth victory in a row under new head coach Nolan
Richardson.
Horacio
Llamas (211-C-73, agency: Interperformances), Mexico's most experienced
player, with an a short stint in the NBA stint and an LNBP Championship
under his belt, contends that Richardson's style, up tempo with tough
defensive pressure, is the difference so far. A new attitude
coupled with a burning desire to rise to the top of the hoops heap in
Latin America and the world is what is driving Llamas and Team Mexico
towards a possible birth at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Is
team Mexico ready for the challenge that will pit the top teams in the
America's against each other at the FIBA Americas tournament in Las
Vegas this August? We'll have to wait and see but if Richardson can
translate '40 minutes of Hell' into Spanish, Mexico's NT will be in hog
heaven when they secure their first trip to the Olympics in the new
millenium.
